The pure opulence of Versailles outside of Paris is a sight to behold. While the commoners lived in poverty the monarchy had that. But when the king was overthrown and ultimately beheaded with the guillotine, the commoners didn't loot or trash Versailles, but made a point very early on to preserve it. I think it speaks to the effortless sophistication of the French.
